Just bought Far Cry through gog.com for 10 smackers: http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/far_cry

It's an older game, but for a shooter it's nice and slow and has got a lot of stealthy stuff going for it. Doug will like it because it has swaying vegetation. ;)

Rotsa fun!

Swaying vegetation? Where do I sign up?

Go ahead and mocketh me, Goggy boy! Perhaps you truly are a fan of the sway, but if you think I'm crazy, just get yourself a copy of Dragon Rising and go crawl into a hedgerow and wait for some enemy infantry to walk by. You'll be saying, "Hmm? These are some nice graphics, but something is ... what's the word? Off?" Then you'll realize that you are in a sterile 3D rendering of an outside scene and that nothing is actually "alive," so to speak.

Deacon and I were playing some SOM missions in ArmA 2 last night and a BMP-like vehicle (it's a new, smaller BMP thing, but I can't remember its name) was stalking us from the other side of the thicket of woods we were in. I was on the upslope from Deacon and he layed eyes on it before I did, but he didn't have a clear shot. I took my SMAW and through 300 meters of forest I could see this armored beastie through the narrowest of slivers between the trees. I did have a shot, but I had to time it to, you guessed it, the swaying of the trees. When the trees swayed one way, my view was cut off, and when they swayed the other, and they were all swaying different directions, I had a shot. I watched the trees for a few moments through the SMAW scope, judged the sway pattern, waited, then made the shot. Direct hit, but only just. A second either way and I'd have hit lumber instead.

Perhaps I am the crazy one with all this respect for swaying vegetation, but it really does elevate your average shooter into a higher, more immersive class of simulation.

Now, would someone please make a joke about girls in grass skirts.

When her grass skirt sways just right you get a glimpse of Posted Image

Okay, looks like I was WRONG.

There is indeed swaying vegetation in Dragon Rising. I guess my last computer just wasn't up to snuff (y'uh).

This new rig is very up to snuff, and now I have lovely tall swaying grass in missions.

And, I am happy to report, going from the Dragon Rising mission editor into the game isn't as painful as it was on that old rig.

Amazing what an additional 3 cpu cores and 3 more RAM will do to improve your opinion of a game.

But I do hate, with every fiber of my being, the checkpoint system. Hate it. Despise it. Here's a tip for developers: give people the option of anytime saves or checkpoints. That way, the snob bastards who say "checkpoints make you use better tactics" can be happy, and guys like me who have jobs and can't afford the time to play the same 25 minutes of a mission over and over, can also be happy. Why it has to be one or the other is STUPID.

There. I said it.
