I just found out something I wasn't aware of before. Country Joe MacDonald of Woodstock fame ("Gimme an F"), was in the Navy.

Yah, saw that. I expect he was only in for 2 years, and spent most of the time writing or carving "FTN" in everything he could.

You're probably right about that, Byron. When I was on the Ashtabula, we had some nitwit spray painting stuff on places like the CO's door, the XO's door, the Wardroom door, etc. What the knucklehead apparently didn't realize is that some poor sap just like him was gonna have to clean that stuff off. I guess the idiot thought the officers were gonna clean it themselves.

Someone like me as CO of Ashtabula:

"XO, I want one of two things to happen: either the fine young individual gets dumped outside my hatch for mast, either by his shipmates or you, or there will be NO liberty for the rest of the cruise, and when we DO get back to homeport, I'll make sure this is the cleanest, most painted ship in the fleet....are you getting the picture, XO?"

Then I'd had the job to the CMC, and tell him to make it happen, and not sweat the methods, long as it got results. That's leadership, AND discipline, and what a hard-core a$$hole like me would do.

Still slicing the raw meat thin, living or dead,

That sounds like the approach our next CO would have taken. "Bad Dog" Woods was an A-6 pilot who was shot down and did time in the Hanoi Hilton, and believe me when I say he didn't take any crap from anybody.
