I didn't know that the A-4 jet hit was piloted by Senator John McCain. I saw his tv interview about the incident - he was able to climb onto the nose by grasping the fuel nozzle and rolled into the fire on the deck and ran towards the forcastle. The first blast hurt him pretty good but he was able to get out of the way.
A hard situation. Fire crews gotta get close but the iron bombs they had on the A-4's weren't hardened for fire and cooked off. Lots of lessons learned from that one.

I heard about John McCain's connection years ago, but wasn't sure if it was true or not. Man, what a Navy career that guy had. He was lucky to survive it.

Geez , for a minute I thought you meant the current Enterprise had been retired ! In my ignorant Aussie opinion , the name Enterprise is , how to spell , synonomous with the US of A and as long as you still have a navy, I would hope you always have a principal ship called "Enterprise".
Its not just the Star Trek thing
, or the fact the name makes you think 'western free enterprise' its just a name that must remain in high esteem in my mind. I sem to recall that on 9/11 , the She was parked just down the street in New York Harbour , is that correct ? I remember commenting to friends that had the perpetrators aimed at Her and not at 10,000 civilians , then I might , just might, have had a little respect for them for having hit a military target. But I digress...
The current one is CVN 67 is that right ? I have a massive shot of the Carl Vinson (70) , can anyone tell me the name of most recent CVN ? Man I wish we had a flat top to park our Hornets on...if only to give my Harpoon Scenarios a little more teeth. Until then , I'll just have to put our Collins Subs up against them....
Oh and hello everyone , I am Paul from Sydney and I love smilies !
Cheers,
PN
